Statement Coats

Statement Coats

If you’re a lover of winter layering, as am I, than you will undoubtedly be thrilled to see so many winter layers
hitting the floor at all your favourite stores over the last few weeks.

As we gear up for a cold Winter, it’s time to start considering what new additions we might need (or in some
cases what we might just want!) to add to our wardrobes. A statement coat, as far as I’m concerned, is a must
have item in all closets. Now, how you choose to purchase is totally up to you however, I have outlined a few
suggestions below to help aid in your decision making.

If you are looking for a coat to go with you everywhere and anywhere, than you are going to want to consider
neutrals. This will help you style the coat over almost any possible outfit combination. Whether you choose to
wear a neutral base underneath or opt for a vibrant colours or prints, a neutral coat will quickly become the
most grabbed item in your closet. I’d suggest looking for a trench coat in this instance as a great quality trench
can do no wrong! Be sure to check out David Jones, Guess, Forever New, Commonry and Country Road.

For the men who might be on the hunt for a coat that can take them from the office to a night out, M.J. Bale
have you covered. From Peacoats to Car Coats, they have a very considered edit of winter coats that look
beautiful styled over suits, or worn a little more casual with denim and chinos. The Dudley coat in grey
herringbone wool is a standout option for its versatility and classic style.

For something a little more dramatic, consider weighted fabrics like leather. Sass & Bide have just dropped a
brown croc leather trench with an A-line silhouette and it doesn’t get much more dramatic than that! If leather
isn’t your thing but you love the look, a lot of retailers will have you covered with a faux finish. French
Connection have a cream leather-look coat which is another great staple. Layering rollneck knitwear or
hoodies is a great way to style a coat and ensure plenty of warmth throughout the colder days.

If it’s colour you are after, then I’m thrilled to say the search is quite easy! I’m so excited to see Australian
retailers still leaning into the bright and bold palettes for their collections. Colour and print are vital to self
expression and this brings so much joy to any outfit. I found many great options from Gorman it was almost
too hard to make a decision. From green to pink, Gorman has it all this season! Sportsgirl have a lot of great
check coats in many colour combinations, as well as the ‘Shacket’ which is your heavy overshirt hybrid that is
warm enough to be treated as a jacket. Cue have just unpacked their Fine Wool Coat in Lime which is so citrus
you can’t help but touch it! Lastly, MYER have some really strong contenders from their in-house brands such
as Miss Shop, Basque and Piper. The Oversized Double Breasted Coat from Piper in navy and orange check is so
strong I almost had to purchase it for myself, too!

To finish off your coated looks, I highly recommend looking to Billini, Jo Mercer, Wittner, Famous Footwear
and Merchant for a hero boot. From a wide range of price points, you’ll be certain to find a boot that
compliments your chosen coat. It’s important to balance the weight of any outfit so a great tip for styling coats
is to go strong in your shoe. If you have a heavy layered top half, choosing a strong boot to ground your outfit
will leave you looking ready to take on the world.

Happy Shopping!
